As I mentioned above I thought Catan was great. I
loved the fact that the mechanics are so simple and
easy to learn and yet the complexities of strategy
and interaction are endless. It has a good balance
between tactics and luck, making it fun to play for
a people of different levels. I also like the fact
that it is quite possible for someone to come back
from a poor position so that a poor start doesn't
necessarily exclude you from the game. My biggest
complaint is probably that it is quite complex to
set up and that there are a lot of pieces that could
get lost. All in all a great game. I'm looking
forward to trying out some of the expansions in the
future.

Memoir '44
- "Absolutely brilliant. Margs and I tried it out last night
and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I was surprised, as
Margs is not really interested in war 'stuff', but she
proved to be quite the strategist. I can really recommend
this game - it is not rules-heavy, is quick to learn and
play.
The play of cards allow for some nice 'ebb and flow' and
surprises. What I also enjoyed about Memoir '44 is that
there was not a steep learning curve - a read through the
rules and that was it. No going back to recheck, no rule
misunderstandings - here the terrain cards helped a lot.
Off course, the fact that it had a whole bunch of bits is
also helpful - the little infantry, tanks and artillery
pieces make a difference to just 'pushing counters'. And
then it makes it much more fun to make the accompanying
noises - grenades exploding, gunfire etc (yes, we are sad ;)
).

"Margs and
I finally got around to playing Runebound, and we both love
it. Yip - my wife is absolutely crazy about it. She loves
the building up of the character, and the ebb and flow of
the game. I didn't think she would enjoy it as much as she
did, although I should have known - we both love PC RPG's.
Runebound is pretty much becoming a nightly institution - we
have to play a game or two (as an aside, the games tend to
be close - one of the games ended with a one-hex difference
in movement deciding the winner).
I am also very impressed with the components and board of
Runebound. There's a lot of bits and pieces, all serving a
purpose. The game has simple rules (6 pages in total) with a
number of additional rules (advanced and homegrown)
available on the net. So, the growth and continued interest
potential of the game is there.
I can hardly wait for the expansions for Runebound to arrive
in South Africa - I will definitely be investing in them. It
was money well spent. As for service, I do not think that I

allows each and every one of my family and friends to have

Settlers it had a lot to live up to. And it didn't fail
once.
Everyone I've played this with has liked it. From the family
to the people who play more complex games it seems settlers
has an extremely wide appeal.
I have played maybe over 50 games of it so far. So often
when we play games it gets taken out first and we just never
put it away until the early hours of the morning arrive.
Normally we would play about 5 to 7 games an evening and
tomorrow evening everyone just wants to play again.
The game is extremely easy to teach. When you are setting up
the board everyone remarks how complicated it looks. About 5
minutes later they go:'This is really easy'.
Yet the game really does have depth and strategy. The
variable setup makes every game different meaning that
strategies that worked in the last game will not necessarily
work again this game. You also need to adapt depending on
what others are doing.
Above all else Settlers is high in fun factor. The main
reason it gets played so much is because everyone enjoys
playing it. This could be due to the high amount of player
interaction from the trading and the robber.
The game also has a fair amount of luck. This is enough so
that everyone stands a chance. The weaker players will also
win once in a while. And it is small enough so that the game
does not feel like a gamble. Strategy is important and if
you win it feels like you earned it through good play.
This game I recommend to anyone. If you only ever buy one
German board game I think Settlers of Catan should be it." -

From Gandalf blasting his way through the forces of evil to

"Carcassonne and Puerto Rico
both looked quite intriguing and different to anything else
that we were used to playing. Carcassonne is a game that can
be enjoyed by everyone, it's quick to understand, quick to
play and really clever the way it's been designed. Even a 3
year old had fun matching the blocks. Puerto Rico requires a
bit more time to understand, but the instructions are clear
and provide a step by step guide that allows you to play and
learn at the same time. The game also lasts a while, which
makes it great for a winter's evening in front of the fire.
Once again, very cleverly constructed. They have both been
